Immediate Denture

Similar to other type of dentures. Immediate denture is name so because it is used "immediately" after teeth extraction. This type of treatment is one of the most difficult and complexed because of unpredictable nature of oral anatomy, oral health and patient behaviour after extraction.

Benefits of Immediate Denture

The advantages of an immediate denture are :

  • Aesthetic: The most important factor is that you will never need to appear in public without teeth. It is also easier to duplicate the shape, color and arrangement of your natural teeth while some are still present in your mouth
  • Fast healing: It will act as a Band-Aid to protect the tissues and reduce bleeding.
  • Early Adaptation: An immediate denture will allow you to establish your speech patterns early. You will not have to learn to speak without a denture in place and then later relearn to speak with a new denture.
  • Functionality: An immediate denture will also allow you to chew better than without any teeth and minimize facial distortion that may occur when teeth are removed.

Disadvantages

There are few disadvantages to consider immediate denture which are :

  • Increased Costs: As immediate denture require on-going treatment such the use of Tissue Conditioner or Relining material, the cost of complete treatment usually is higher than conventional denture.
  • Try-in: as the denture is made before patient can try-in, thus the denture may not look perfectly as expected.
  • Fitting: Most of immediate denture after insertion may not be stable and can easily become loose because the gingivae (gum) is undergoing healing and constantly changing. Thus there are several follow-up appointments which patient needs attend to refit the denture.

How many appointments needed to complete this treatment ?

Initially, this require four to five appointments to complete.

Subsequently, after extraction, patient will need to come back two to three more times to refit the denture.

In total, six to eight appointments are needed to successfully complete the appointments
